Living in the Cape means a person is surrounded by dozens of wine-tasting experiences from luxurious MCC and macarons pairings, to safari wine-tastings and now on my list, wine-tasting experience in a cave.
In all honesty, Durbanville is one of the most underrated wine-tasting destinations in the Cape. The Durbanville Wine Valley is often outshined by the popular Constantia and Stellenbosch wine routes. But I would definitely suggest you do not overlook Durbanville, put it into your maps and pop into my new favourite hidden gem in the area.
A few weeks ago my friends and I decided to take a drive to Durbanvile and visit the rustic and beautiful boutique wine farm called, Klein Roosboom Boutique Winery. I had known and heard of this winery through social media and word of mouth. It’s definitely one of Durbanville’s best kept secret with one of the most exquisite wine-tasting experiences, offering exceptional red and white wines in a cozy setup interior. We had a lovely wine-tasting experience in a really intimate and cozy cave that was beautifully decorated with white pillows and pretty lights (see in image below).
Klein Roosboom has eight themed ‘caves’ where you can do wine-tasting experiences with your friends and family. The white wine tasting includes the estate’s Rosé, three Sauvignon Blancs, and unwooded Chardonnay while the red wine tasting has their Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. This, together with their beautiful tasting room, fresh fruit and delicious meat platters, and quirky themed ‘cave’ spaces, makes Klein Roosboom’s offerings extra special and so unforgettable.
Why you should visit: If you’re looking for one of the most unique and fun social wine-tasting experiences with your friends and family, then this is definitely a hit! Each ‘cave’ offers a different experience but if it is something you’re experience for the first time it will sure be something that you’ll truly enjoy in a unique way.
Cost: R40 for white wine tasting (3 Sauvignon Blancs, 1 Unwooded Chardonnay, 1 Rosé) and R30 for red wine tasting (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz)
Fun Fact: The ‘caves’ were previously used as storage areas for wines and were later converted to individual themed ‘caves’ for fun and social wine-tasting experiences.
This was such an unique concept and I loved every minute of it! I’m so glad I visited and finally got to experience wine-tasting in one of these historical ‘caves.’
Next time you feel like experiencing a winery, make sure to pop into Durbanville and specifically Klein Roosboom Boutique Winery for a little something out of the ordinary and fun.
